Formation selection methodology for deep geological repository in Lithuania

A special program and action plan have been developed in Lithuania for the purpose of implementing European Council Directive 2011/70/Euratom 19 July 2011, establishing Community framework responsible safe management spent fuel radioactive waste. An important part this is related to geological investigations site selection, design construction deep repository (DGR) nuclear high-level long-lived wastes. The main task select a suitable environment DGR, which closely that DGR site. There are several alternative formations potentially Lithuania. Selection most should be made concept applying clear methodology. proposed methodology based on safety requirements established by International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), systematic approach criteria widely used worldwide. suitability evaluation divided into 4 groups according factors stability system. highest rank significance assigned group associated with loss long-term system confinement second ranked significance. third could characterized as data availability group. It consists emergence uncertainties. Features or processes improvement formation properties over time fourth lowest application allows calculating score each depending level detail at any stage investigation.
